Amazon.in flat file guide for apparel sellers

An Amazon flat file is the category spreadsheet Seller Central uses to create many listings at once. Most rejected rows come from a handful of rules: dropdown values, variation relationships and field limits. This guide explains each one.

01

Start from your own category template

Download the inventory file template for your category from Seller Central’s bulk upload page. The template only accepts the columns and dropdown values defined for that category. EcommerceListing works from the template you provide: it writes only to columns the template has, and fills dropdown-backed columns with a value from that template’s own list. A value Amazon does not offer fails the entire row, while a blank optional attribute only leaves it unset.

02

Model sizes as a parent and children

A product sold in several sizes is a variation family. One parent row carries the shared content — title, brand, bullets and description — and no price or stock. Each child row is one size with its own SKU, price and quantity, and points back to the parent SKU with the variation theme. A product with a single size stays one standalone row.

  • Every child references the same parent SKU.
  • The variation theme (for example size, or size and colour) must be one the category allows.
  • Do not give the parent row a price or quantity.
03

Keep the title factual and within limits

Amazon’s global title cap is 200 characters, and apparel categories are stricter: EcommerceListing caps apparel titles at 125 characters and aims for roughly 80, in a Brand + Department + Product Name form. Since January 2025 Amazon may suppress titles that repeat a word more than twice, and promotional phrases such as “best seller” or “free shipping” are not allowed. Both are flagged before export.

04

Use five bullets and byte-limited search terms

Seller Central accepts up to five bullet points of about 255 characters each. Backend search terms are measured in bytes, not characters: the field must stay within 250 bytes, and an over-limit field can be ignored entirely. Hindi or other non-Latin text uses more bytes per character, so count carefully. EcommerceListing truncates search terms to 250 bytes and tells you when it did.

05

Fill the mandatory Amazon.in apparel fields

Target gender and country of origin are mandatory for apparel on Amazon.in, along with size and colour on each child. Brand must match the brand on your account. If country of origin is missing, EcommerceListing fills India and flags the row so an imported product can be corrected.

06

Link images, upload and read the processing report

Images are provided as public URLs: one main image and additional image slots. After upload, Seller Central produces a processing report listing each failed row with an error code and message. Fix the rows in your source file and upload only the corrected rows again.

Before you export

Common questions

Why does Amazon reject a value that looks correct?

Dropdown columns accept only the exact values in that category’s template. “Blue” and “blue” or “Cotton Blend” and “Cotton blend” can be different values. Pick from the template’s list.

Can I reuse one flat file for every category?

No. Each category template has its own columns and allowed values. Download the template for the category you are listing in.

Should I list the same product again if it already exists on Amazon?

Check the catalog first. Offering an existing product and creating a new product use different workflows in Seller Central.
